SoCA 510 Symbolizing the Awakened Heart: Buddhist Visual Literacy

How can our path and Buddhist symbolism connect in a meaningful and experiential way?

Explore the fundaments of Tibetan Buddhist symbolism and the graphic skills that represent it. Knowing the view and symbolism of the awakened heart enhances the path of drawing and painting. Likewise, when creating such physical representations, the ground of that symbolism can emerge freshly and directly.

Through the principles of visual literacy, representations of enlightened lineage, and valid cognition, the Science of Creative Arts door swings opens to reveal the world of buddha nature. In addition to Buddhist visual literacy, you will learn the basic skills sets of Karma Gadri thangka painting that will be taught at a level appropriate to the experience of each participant. No previous experience or artistic skill is necessary. Materials will be supplied.

Session 1 & 2

LAN 500 Introduction to Tibetan Language

This course is oriented toward beginners who have little knowledge of Tibetan but would like to gain some familiarity with the language and how it is translated into English. We will cover the alphabet and pronunciation. We will then select a few songs or liturgies connected with practice at Nitartha, learn how to chant them in Tibetan, and at the same time investigate their meaning in both Tibetan and in English. By looking into the Tibetan behind the English, we expect to gain a richer understanding of the underlying subject matter. The songs and liturgies presented this summer will be different from the material presented in summer 2018.
