Enjoy a new location in beautiful Oregon
We are very excited to announce that the Nitartha Summer Institute has found a new home for the summer: Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, about 1 hour south of Portland Oregon Airport and 3.5 hours (by car or train) south of Seattle.
It is a beautiful campus with nice dorm rooms – and good food! And we are happy to announce that room and board will be less expensive than in previous years.
You can take a quick peek at the university campus here. More information will be available soon.
Deepen Your Meditation, Enrich Your view: A new Unified Program
In 2019, study and meditation will be joined at the Summer Institute! All students will receive Mahamudra meditation instruction and a significant portion of each day will be devoted to practice; equally important, they will also attend one study class to deepen their understanding of the view.
Here are the main details at a glance:
Mahamdura teachings and practice based on the 9th Karmapa’s precious text Ocean of Definitive Meaning will be offered on 2 Levels of practice.
Level 1, Mahamudra Shamatha, will be led by Scott Wellenbach and is open to all students.
Level 2, Mahamudra Vipashyana, will be led by Acharya Lama Tenpa and is open to all students who fulfill certain requirements (information coming soon).
Students have the opportunity to complete Mahamudra Shamatha in one summer and qualify for next summer’s Vipashyana teachings!
“In Mahamudra, we meditate on the nature of mind to attain the kind of realization that is genuine, immediate, and uncontaminated by conceptual understandings.” – Dakpo Tashi Namgyal
The Study classes will take you on a journey to discover your mind in depth. You will encounter the very practical applications of the various Buddhist philosophies which can have a deep impact on your everyday life and will also help you clarify what you are working with in meditation.
Students who have not taken prior Nitartha Institute Shedra classes will begin with Mind and Its World and learn how our mind engages its world and how it functions.
Students who have attended Shedra classes in the past will be able to take more advanced Mahayana study classes.
“The studies we do in the Shedra classes are not just for becoming a scholar or well versed in literature. They are all connected with our practice and they help us to demystify our mind and its world. Everybody likes Mahamudra and Dzogchen, but the practice of Mahamudra and Dzogchen very much depends on the understanding that we develop through the Shedra classes.” – Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche
“Without knowing mind, forget about knowing the nature of mind.” – Acharya Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen
Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche’s teachings
Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche is scheduled to be present July 5–24, i.e., for all of 1st and 2nd 9-day programs, barring any unexpected changes in his schedule.
Rinpoche will continue to teach the two texts he started teaching in 2018:
1) Bötrül’s masterful text Distinguishing the Views and Philosophies on Mipham Rinpoche’s presentation of the view of the Dzogchen vehicle by clarifying difficult points that include Madhyamaka tenets;
2) Mipham’s commentary on the Guhyagarbha Tantra Luminous Essence which is the main tantra of the Mahayoga class and the primary Tantric text studied in the Nyingma tradition as a key to understanding empowerment, samaya, mantras, mandalas and other Vajrayana topics.
There will be one period with elective classes, where you can choose most likely between Mudra Space Awareness, Tibetan language, and Creativity & the Arts.
We will do our best to offer most teachings with Chinese translation.
Join an inspiring community with a program that allows for deep personal connections with teachers and other students!
“I had a thoroughly fantastic time exploring the Dharma along with fellow scholars and practitioners in a beautiful environment. The opportunity to meet and talk with so many excellent teachers continues to inspire me, and I attribute my enthusiasm for Tibetan debate to my time spent at the Nitartha Institute this summer. Nitartha holds a special place as a rare opportunity to be completely immersed in a diverse community of Buddhist scholars and practitioners from around the world.”
— Cody Foster, Nitartha Summer Institute Student
Exceptional Teachers in a Beautiful Place
Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche
We’re cultivating our intelligence as opposed to expanding or upgrading its contents. It’s like brightening a room by putting a higher-watt lightbulb in a lamp. Suddenly we can see everything in the room much more clearly.
—Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche
Acharya Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen
Nitartha is a unique place for Buddhist practice and study where you can combine the intellectual mind and experiential heart.
—Acharya Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen
